Walking out of the appointment that gave our son his diagnosis we were unsure what to do first. It is my goal to help families that are stuck in that same feeling.  So this week I shared what we wish we would have known in the first year after receiving the Level 2 Autism Spectrum Disorder diagnosis for our son.

These top 3 things helped after receiving an Autism Spectrum diagnosis.

  1. Finding resources such as TACA (join your local chapter), Autism Society of Minnesota (or your region), CDC and more.
  2. Researching Doctors, Schools, Biomed or MAPS provider, and websites for resources. Locating all of your options, doing the research and choosing what is best for your child. We did not know about Biomedical treatment or what a MAPS provider was. We didn’t know for almost 2 years (I had a client that was a Biomedical Pediatric Physician and had no clue he could help us) what Biomedical treatment was or how it could help.
  3. Find a support system – There is great value in walking through the autism journey with a partner. If it is not your spouse, a friend, relative or another autism parent.  It is enormously beneficial to have someone you can confide in.

You will make it through, and you will learn to thrive in this new “normal”.
